Last Saturday (May 15, 2010) few of us decided to climb Mt Baker on skis. The weather forecast was perfect. We had two teams. The Polish team (Martin, Irek, Piotr and Greg) left Vancouver at 2:30 am Saturday morning and arrived at the trailhead about 5:30ish.
We took the alternate start route “via the bathrooms” which allowed us skinning almost right from the bottom. We had to overcome a steep and crusted gully which definitely did slow us down.

The second team (Anna, Mike, Kurt and Scott) stayed over in Glacier Springs in Kurt’s cabin and started climbing around 6:30 am. Greg has ultimately hooked up with the second team right before the final ridge as Piotr and Sopocka Torpeda (Torpedo from Sopot) – Martin were ahead.

The climb was great and the weather was just perfect. It took us between 6-7.5 h to get to the top. Personally the last 200m were the hardest for me. At around 3000m the thin air was definitely kicking in. The smell of sulfur from the vents near the crater was not helping… Hanging out on the top was still a great pleasure.

Here are some photos from this trip

an automated messaging service that will allow you to easily send bulk text/sms or voice broadcast message to every phone numbers that can be organized and grouped based on any category. It would be great for marketing departments, schools, congregations, sports teams, businesses and municipalities for emergency notifications and reminders. More info can be found here:SMS Matrix

Wondering how to fit/refit your Intuition liners? This was a dilemma I faced a few days ago. Fortunately Intuition Sports Inc. is our local Vancouver company and Rob and Crystal are very helpful folks. They provide a refitting service for $20 or you can try doing it yourself at home.

One of the many types of Intuition Liners

Here are the home fitting instructions I have received from Rob at Intuition Sports Inc.

Steps:

1. Take out your fit kit from your liners; this includes 1 pair of fitting socks, 1 pair of toe caps.

2. Take your old liners out of your boots and replace them with your new Intuition liners.

3. Remove 1 fitting sock from the package.

4. Fill the sock with 3-4 lbs of long or short grain white rice. That’s right, fill it with rice! Use 3 lbs. of rice for sizes 9 and below and 4 lbs. of rice for sizes 10 and above.

5. Now tie a knot at the end of the sock. A figure eight if you know how or a granny knot will also work.

6. Spread the sock out on a counter and form it into a large, long sausage shape.

7. Place the rice sock into your microwave oven; be sure to keep it in an even tubular shape.

8. Set your oven on one of the following settings based on the ovens wattage output 700W – 7 min / 1000 – 1100W 5 min / 1200 – 1250W 4 min

9. Heat the rice sock in the oven for the specified time.

10. Place the toe cap on your foot, left or right your choice. Be sure to place the Intuition logo on your big toe.

11. Place the other fitting sock over the toe cap and pull up the sock evenly, eliminating all wrinkles.

12. When the timer goes off pull your rice sock out of the oven by the knotted end. Be careful it’s hot and you could get burned!

13. Hold it by the knot and place it into your liner. You will need to work the rice sock into your liner by hitting the boot into the floor multiple times first on its heel and then on it’s toe. Keep on tapping it into the floor going back and forth between the heel and toe until the rice sock has settled deeper into the liner.

14. Set a timer for 5 – 7 minutes and let the boot stand with the rice sock inside the liner.

15. Remove the rice sack after at least 5 minutes and place your foot in the boot liner with your toe cap on securely. Buckle up or lace up your boot to the normal tension settings. Keep weight on your boot for 5 – 7 minutes, walking around occasionally.

16. You are now done. Remove your foot, take off the sock and toe cap and get ready to do the next boot in the same way.

If you have any questions or concerns give us a call at (604) 879-9231or send us an e-mail info@intuitionliners.com

Have fun and enjoy your new liners.

Lake Ann trail is a great 8.4 miles (round-trip) hike in the Mt. Baker area (North Cascade Mountains, WA). Best time to visit it is August to October (there might be still snow on parts of the trail the rest of the year). The hike takes about 5-6 hour (round-trip) and is considered to be a moderate one. It suits nicely for a weekend overnight backpacking trip. That’s what we did last weekend.

What summarizes this hike is: great views of Mt. Shuksan and Mt.Baker, open meadows, rock gardens and amazing abundance of blueberries (September).

There is a primitive campground at the lake. If you are lucky you can hear the thunder like rumbles of falling rocks and ice from the Upper and Lower Curtis Glaciers. We were

Enjoy the photos

Sauna, BBQ salmon (courtesy of Duane) and bonfire jamming, good times as usual.

My friend Rick Lata was there on Saturday and shot a great kiting video. Enjoy (You will need Flash Player V10 or higher to view it)

The cool and funky cars of Japan

My recent trip to south of Japan (Shikoku Island) was quite exciting. Great food (I really mean GREAT FOOD!), visiting Tomoko`s relatives, sightseeing, experiencing hot Japanese summer and guess what … car hunting. Well not in the literal sense really. I was not planing to buy anything. It was more like hunting them with the lens of my camera.

I was quite astonished how many different and unknown in North America cars exist in Japan. Many of them very cool and funky. My rough estimate is that out of all the cars I have seen during my trip only about 10-15% were the ones that are also known in North America. This group consists mainly of the Japanese cars, European cars and some American cars.

The Japanese cars from the first group look the same but often have different names than their North American counterparts. An example here could be Isuzu Trooper which in Japan is called Isuzu Bighorn.

Out of Europe in the lead are Audis, VWs, BMWs, Volvos and Mercs. Out of US, I have seen few Jeeps, one or two H2 and few Chevys. I acually saw few Japanezy/boxy Chevrolets which I have never seen in the North America.

The remaining 85-90% is a plethora of cars made by Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Daihatsu, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Subaru and Isuzu. It is really amazing how many different models I have seen for the each manufacturer. I kept running into many interesting new cars every day.

It seems like the predominant car these days in Japan is a car with the boxy look. Think Scion or Nissan Cube. These come in different sizes and forms. Some “Smart Car like” super tiny, others in the size of our minivans.

Close to this group are minivans with some very cool ones from Toyota and Mitsubishi. The fifth generation of the Mistubishi Delica (D5) is out. It is substantially bigger than the imported from Japan “cult” Delica (Generation 3) we know in Canada. Also it seems that it has lost the ”hippy/adventurer/surfer” look. Personally I think that the Delica Gen 4 (Space Gear) is cooler that the most recent one.

My favorite group – SUVs had many interesting specimens unknown in America. Toyota Prado, Mitsubishi Pajero, Mitsubishi Pajero Mini and few more.

In general there are many funky looking, economical small cars. These have yellow license plates as opposed to the white plates which are reserved for what is considered a big cars (Mini Coopers had a white plates).

This is a rare find. A Mitsubishi Model 73. This is a Japanese Self Defense forces vehicle and it is probably impossible to purchase it. It is based on Pajero model. I also found out on the web that this vehicle in civilian version was exported to New Zeeland. This was my favorite car along with Delica Space Gear (D4) and Honda Crossroad.

I did not see Inifinitis or Acuras but came across few Lexuses. I also did not see any Toyota FJ Cruisers.
